Microneedling Roller FAQ’s
A Skin Rejuvenation Innovation: Microneedling Roller
The Dr Roller Derma Roller (Microneedling Roller) is a breakthrough tool which can naturally trigger collagen and elastin production in the top layers of the skin without damaging it. A Microneedling Roller can be used by both men and women and has multiple beneficial effects:
- Scar Treatment – which includes acne scar reduction
- Stretch Mark Treatment
- Anti Aging
- Anti Wrinkle
- Cellulite Treatment
- Hair Loss Treatment / Hair Restoration
- Hyper Pigmentation Treatment
QUESTION? What do wrinkles, scars, stretch marks and uneven skin have in common?
ANSWER: Insufficient collagen! If your skin would create more collagen then you wouldn’t get them. Occasional use of a Microneedling Roller gives Mother Nature a helping hand by encouraging collagen production in the skin, which will help reverse / prevent their formation.
Even the celebrities of Hollywood are using cosmetic microneedling to give their skin a youthful and healthy glow. Probably the most famous showbiz personalities reported to have undergone Microneedling Roller treatment are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
What is the Dr Roller Derma Roller / Dermaroller?
The Dr Roller Derma Roller (or Dermaroller) has the features of a precision engineered medical device, with the simplicity necessary to use in the comfort of your home. It is based on a simple hand held roller which has 192 surgical steel micro needles which can open the pores of the uppermost layer of the skin without damaging it. Your pores return to a normal state around 45 minutes to an hour later, but during that time window, your skin is much better able to absorb and benefit from skin creams and lotions.
The photograph shown below shows a magnified view of the roller. The needles are just one millimetre in length so it gives you a tickling feeling when the Dr Roller Derma Roller is used.

Micro needling of the skin is becoming a far more popular cosmetic procedure, but the Dr Roller Derma Roller is an FDA approved product which is easy enough that you can carry it out at home. Despite this, it has comparable results to Laser Treatment, Chemical Peels and Dermabrasion, but it is considerably less invasive and is just a small part of the cost.
How does the Microneedling Roller Work?
As you roll the Derma Roller over your skin, it makes microscopic punctures into the dermis – most of which are just pushing your pores open temporarily. Your skin perceives this as damage, which causes the release of growth factors that, in turn, initiate the production of collagen and elastin. Your body is designed to react to any injury by initiating the process of healing, but typically it will just mend as far as it must to keep you healthy – which is completely different to healing to a cosmetic level. By constantly triggering this healing process, you encourage your skin to continue repairing until the task is done.
Your skin generally accepts that stretch marks, scars and wrinkles are acceptable, but with a gentle daily reminder triggered by the Microneedling Roller your skin is reminded to continue the repair process until the skin has also repaired itself on a cosmetic level. This process of skin remodelling can continue for months beyond each Dermal Roller session, but detectable results can be experienced within a week or two! Your skin naturally renews itself every forty days, so with a little bit of effort, the changes can be dramatic and fast.
Cosmetic microneedling with a Microneedling Roller can be conducted safely on all skin colours and all types of skin. Other treatments typically need to avoid sensitive areas – like the backs of the hands, around the eyes and the neck, but with a shorter needle length a Microneedling Roller can be used on all of these areas. The epidermis and melanocytes in the basal area of the skin are not damaged, so there’s no possibility of post inflammatory hyper pigmentation.
How do you use a Microneedling Roller?
The Microneedling Roller process is easy and can be done at home. Check out our Microneedling Roller Instructions page for further details.
How soon does the Microneedling Roller get results?
As you would imagine, the rate you will achieve noticeable results is dependent on what you are treating along with how far your skin must remodel the affected area. This process of skin remodelling can continue for numerous weeks after each Derma Roller session, but noticeable changes may be seen within 7 to 10 days! Your skin automatically renews itself every forty days, so with a little perseverance changes can be hugely rewarding.
Does using a Microneedling Roller hurt? or make you bleed?
There are two ways to use your Microneedling Roller. The first version requires the use of numbing cream to numb the area, which allows more forceful use of the Microneedling Roller once per week. The second alternative, requires the use of the Microneedling Roller with less pressure up to 5 times each week. Using the roller softly gives a tickling feeling and is not painful – although your face is more sensitive to it than your body.
Neither of these two methods should make you bleed. You could have a temporary reddening of the skin for up to an hour after dermal rolling and it has been known to give a feeling similar to mild sunburn. We advocate the use of sunblock or sunscreen after microneedling. Check out our Microneedling Roller Instructions page for more information.

Can a Dr Roller Microneedling Roller really heal stretch marks?
Stretch mark removal is just one of the numerous benefits associated with using a Dr Roller Microneedling Roller. Stretch marks happen when the skin is forced to stretch stretched suddenly. The outer layer of skin isn’t affected, but the dermis beneath becomes thinner and develops tiny tears. The capillaries that lie under the surface of the skin show through, giving the stretchmarks a reddish colour. Later, when the blood vessels contract, the purplish colour fades to a paler skin tone.
The most common triggers for stretchmarks are pregnancy (between 75% and 90% of ladies develop stretch marks at some point during pregnancy), growth spurts in young people, rapid muscle growth in weight lifters and weightloss or gain.
The process of removing stretch marks or the reduction of stretch marks happens as the Dr Roller Microneedling Roller causes the production of more elastin and collagen fibres in the skin. The stretch marks gradually fill in, the skin grows thicker, tightens and the elasticity is restored. The rate at which stretch marks removal can be achieved varies depending on the severity of the marks, but noticeable changes can be detected in as little as a week with dramatic results in a month or less.

Are these the same as other Skin Rollers?
No. Not all skin rollers are the same. Some rollers do not carry the FDA certification that the Dr Roller Derma Roller does. Other cheaper rollers are frequently disposable and aren’t made to the same specification of surgical steel (so they may blunt or break), and more importantly is if they are gamma sterilized. The Microneedling Roller is constructed to the highest specification so that it can be used repeatedly and intensively for 12 to 24 weeks. It is manufactured / quality controlled in accordance with ISO/CE/FDA standards and gamma sterilised according to ISO 11137.
